Introduction
This is a collaborative lesson in which you will work in groups to gain knowledge. Individually, you will read the articles and watch the videos within this lesson. Then in groups, you will collaborate to create a PowerPoint presentation that demonstrates an understanding of the concepts presented.

Overview

Grief is a common disorder that surrounds a loss. Loss can occur when a person has a physical decline or decline in function, or with loss of life. For this activity, grief associated with the loss of life will be discussed. Participating in this activity will prepare you to provide care to the patient and family with anticipatory grief.

The PURPOSE of this lesson is to conceptualize the role of the nurse in preparing, providing care, and communicating with patients and families when the loss of life is expected. It is important for you, as the nurse, to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of anticipatory grief to provide appropriate support and care.

By the end of this activity, you WILL BE ABLE TO:
  • care for the patient and family experiencing anticipatory grief using the nursing process.
  • assess the needs of the patient and family experiencing anticipatory grief.
  • develop a nursing diagnose of anticipatory grief.
  • plan care for the patient and family experiencing anticipatory grief.
  • interventions for the patient and family experiencing anticipatory grief.
  • evaluate interventions used to provide care to determine their effectiveness of interventions in meeting the goals identified through assessing the patient and family.
  • demonstrate an understanding for the use of conceptualized care models to provide care for patients and families with anticipatory grief.
  • demonstrate an understanding of communication when caring for the patient and family with anticipatory grief.
